We've JUST learned about a fabulous FUN-Learning-helpful-website:
This is a great vocbulary game that has a wonderful twist! For every word you get right, they donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. Take time to Feed Someone Today! How many words do you know on their challenge -- so fun!! You can set your level from zero to 50; or it finds it automatically! You can watch your skill improve! Note: Quick Summary: Almost all of the deaths from hunger and disease that you see in the world can be stopped. The cost to do this is about $195 billion a year, according to the United Nations. Twenty-two developed countries in the United Nations have pledged to work towards each giving 0.7% (a little less than 1%) of their national income in international aid, which would raise the $195 billion. Some countries are slow to meet their pledge. Some countries have reached their goal: Norway, Sweden, Luxembourg, Denmark, and Netherlands. However, Canada and the United States (I grew up on the Canadian Border and now live exclusively in the USA) both are way down on the list from reaching their Goal! The United Kingdom is scheduled to reach their goal in 2013. There are effective programs to break the downward spiral of poverty and starvation. For adults, there are “food for work” programs where the adults are paid with food to build schools, dig wells, make roads, and so on. This both nourishes them and builds infrastructure to end the poverty. For children, there are “food for education” programs where the children are provided with food when they attend school. Their education will help them to escape from hunger and global poverty. And, I ask myself...why do students DROP OUT of school in the USA when school is provided free, and the food and shelter can often provided free, also? And the dropout rate is higher in non-whites; and they complain the most! And, their poverty level is higher, and their incarceration rate is MUCH-MUCH higher. People say it is because the courts are against them. I say it is because they dropped out of school! *************************************************
